Application
The application form for trainees can be downloaded here.
Deadline for sending applications: 10 May 2022.
Location and dates
The 2 nd TUMIEE Training School entitled “Electronic Effects in far-from Equilibrium Atom Dynamics (E3AD)” will be held in Helsinki (Finland) from the 13 th to the 17 th of June 2022.
The sessions will take place in the premises of the University of Helsinki at the following address: Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2, Helsinki, Physicum Building, 2 nd floor, room E204.
How to get to the Training School venue and local transport in Helsinki
From Helsinki-Vantaa airport, there are train (“I” and “P” trains), bus and taxi connections to the city center. Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (HSL) manages the public transport (bus, tram, metro, and some trains like the airport trains). Tickets can be purchased from vending machines located near stops. To travel from the airport to the city center, you need the “ABC” ticket, but the “AB” ticket is enough to travel within Helsinki and cheaper. You can either buy a single ticket (valid for about an hour) or a daily ticket. For example, you could buy the “ABC” single ticket for
transports from and to the airport and a 5-day “AB” ticket for transport within Helsinki during the training school. HSL has an app (available in English) that gives bus, metro, and tram suggestions. You can also buy tickets directly from the app and show the electronic ticket to the bus driver.
The easiest and fastest way to get to the venue site from your hotel is to use the app to find a suitable bus to “Kumpulan kampus” (Kumpula campus). However, if you do not want to use the app, you can take the Metro to Sörnäinen, and continue from there with trams 6 or 8 to the north direction, to stop Kumpula kampus. Note that the
campus is on the west side of the highway, and there is a pedestrian crossing to get to that side. After the crossing there is a path through the forest with a sign that says “Helsingin yliopisto”. Take the path on the right of the sign, and you should see the Physicum building on the left side of the street. The entrance is on the other end of the building.
Purpose of the training
The goal of the training school is to disseminate the state-of-the-art in the field of simulation of materials under high electronic excitation. The special focus of this School will be the modelling of far-from equilibrium processes, electronic evolution and electron-phonon coupling. This will be framed within a multiscale approach to electronic excitation, resulting in a general overview of the various simulation and experimental methods and techniques presently in use, and the areas that are in need of further advances.
The School is a great opportunity for young researchers at the beginning of their careers in this field or to more experienced researchers to expand their background towards new methods. With these ideas in mind, the 5-day school will be organized in the form of general lectures in the mornings, and hands-on computer practical tutorials after lunch. The general lectures are intended to provide an introduction to the tutorials and, more importantly, to provide a general description of the electronic excitation field to all participants. Tutorials are intended as a means
to make the participants familiar with sophisticated methods that potentially benefit their research.
Finally, the School will foster the forging of new collaborative partnerships between participants. Indeed, the COST Action TUMIEE, with more than 300 members, is an excellent network for fruitful collaborations, of particular interest for young researchers.

Reimbursement of the travel expenses
Trainees and trainers selected to be reimbursed for their travel expenses must receive an official invitation through e-COST indicating they are eligible to be reimbursed and they must accept that invitation within 2 weeks.
Reimbursements will follow COST rules:
- Long-distance transport expenses (more than 100 km one way): up to 500€ (*).
Reimbursement based on invoice/receipt. Participants must choose the most economical
means of transportation from their city of affiliation to Helsinki (round-trip).
(*) If a participant shows, within a reasonable time before travel date that there is no reasonable transport below the cap established, this cap could be waved for the individual participant. - Daily Allowance (DA) is intended to cover accommodation, meals and local transport
expenses (defined as less or equal to 100 km one way). This is a flat rate and no invoice/receipt
is required. The DAs established for this Training School are the following:
– Trainees: 125 €/day
– Trainers: 180 €/day
The maximum DA rate that can be claimed is calculated against the actual number of days a participant attends the event (as confirmed against their signature on the official attendance list for each day of the Training School), plus 1, permitting participants to arrive on the day before the meeting and/or leave one day after.
In the travel days, the DA is based on departure and arrival times, as bellow.
For complete information about COST reimbursement rules, please read pages 84-90 of the COST Annotated Rules.
Accommodation
Listed below are hotel suggestions. For a price affordable within the DA for the trainees, we recommend Eurohostel, or sharing a room.
- Scandic Grand Central Helsinki
- Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Helsinki
- Scandic Kaisaniemi
- Scandic Hakaniemi
- Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel
- Eurohostel
The workshop site at Kumpula can be reached by a single bus from the railway station in the city center, Kaisaniemi, Hakaniemi, Sörnäinen, or Kallio. The busses to Kumpula campus (the training school site) start from the east side of the railway station and travel through these districts in the same order.
Many other hotels within the city area are also viable, while they might require a bus/tram change. For more affordable options for the trainees, especially the Viikki region is worth checking and has good connections to Kumpula campus.
